California Paycheck Calculator (2026)
Net pay in California after federal income tax, FICA and state income tax.
How the California Paycheck Calculator: Take-Home Pay Works
This California paycheck calculator estimates your take-home pay in California using the 2026 federal brackets, Social Security, Medicare and California's state income tax (graduated rates from 1% to 13.3%). California combines the largest graduated income tax in the country with a payroll-funded disability and paid family leave program, so paychecks here have more lines than most. Enter your salary, pay frequency, filing status and any pre-tax deduction to see net pay per paycheck and per year.
How California taxes wages
California uses ten graduated brackets, from 1% on the first slice of income up to 12.3%, with an extra 1% Mental Health Services Tax on income above $1 million that brings the top rate to 13.3%. For a single filer, the first $11,079 of taxable income is taxed at 1%, the next slice up to $26,264 at 2%, and the 9.3% bracket starts at $72,724. Joint filers get roughly double each threshold. California then subtracts a small standard deduction of $5,540 for single filers or $11,080 for joint filers and gives a tax credit, not a deduction, of $153 or $306 for personal exemptions.
Because the brackets are steep in the middle, a worker earning $65,000 often lands in the 8% or 9.3% band on part of their income even though the federal bracket is only 12% or 22%. California generally conforms to the federal treatment of traditional 401(k) deferrals, so those contributions lower state taxable wages. Use the standard deduction and credit assumptions in the calculator as a baseline, then adjust for dependents, itemized deductions and credits on your return.
How this calculator estimates your California paycheck
The calculator starts with your gross pay, subtracts the pre-tax deduction you enter, and applies the 2026 federal standard deduction of $16,100 for single filers or $32,200 for married couples filing jointly. Federal income tax comes from the seven 2026 brackets, Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45% with a 0.9% surcharge above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (joint). For California it then applies graduated rates from 1% to 13.3% income tax after a state standard deduction of $5,540 for single filers and $11,080 for joint filers and a personal exemption credit of $153 for single filers and $306 for joint filers. Pre-tax deferrals reduce state taxable income in the estimate, as they do on most state returns. The optional payroll deduction field covers california sdi. Results are estimates; your employer's payroll system and your tax return are final. See the US paycheck guide for the full method.
Typical pay in California
Employers in California reported roughly 18,213,700 jobs in May 2025. The median annual wage across all of them was $58,240 ($28.00 an hour), 14% above the national median of $50,980. The average wage was higher, at $80,690, because a smaller number of high earners pull the average up; the median is the better guide to a typical paycheck.
After federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and the California taxes in this calculator, a single worker on that $58,240 median takes home about $46,675 a year, or $3,890 a month and $1,795.19 every two weeks.

Worked example: $65,000 salary in California, paid every two weeks
A single California employee earning $65,000, paid every two weeks and contributing $100 per paycheck to a traditional 401(k), has gross pay of $2,500.00 per paycheck. After the $2,600 deferral and the $16,100 federal standard deduction, taxable income is $46,300 and federal income tax is about $5,308. Social Security is $4,030 and Medicare is $943. California state income tax is about $1,793, an effective state rate of 2.76% of gross pay. Estimated state payroll deductions add about $845.
Net pay is about $49,481 a year, or $1,903.12 per paycheck, which is 76.1% of gross pay. Change any input in the calculator above to test your own situation.
Married couple example: $110,000 combined pay
A married couple filing jointly in California with $110,000 of combined wages and 6% ($6,600) going to traditional retirement plans has federal taxable income of $71,200 and pays about $8,048 in federal income tax and $8,415 in FICA. California income tax comes to roughly $2,303. Estimated take-home pay is about $83,204 a year, or $3,200.15 per biweekly paycheck.
Best-paying common jobs in California

California take-home pay at three salaries
These estimates assume a single filer, no pre-tax deductions, 1.3% of state payroll deductions and the 2026 federal standard deduction.
- $40,000: federal income tax about $2,620, FICA $3,060, California income tax about $589, other state and local deductions about $520, leaving roughly $33,211 a year ($1,277.33 per biweekly paycheck).
- $65,000: federal income tax about $5,620, FICA $4,973, California income tax about $1,988, other state and local deductions about $845, leaving roughly $51,575 a year ($1,983.64 per biweekly paycheck).
- $100,000: federal income tax about $13,170, FICA $7,650, California income tax about $5,070, other state and local deductions about $1,300, leaving roughly $72,810 a year ($2,800.37 per biweekly paycheck).

Where the tax goes on a $65,000 California paycheck
Of about $13,425 in total annual taxes for a single filer earning $65,000 with no pre-tax deductions, federal income tax is about 42%, Social Security and Medicare together are about 37%, California income tax is about 15%, and other state and local payroll or income taxes are about 6%. Federal taxes dominate almost everywhere, which is why federal planning tools such as the federal income tax calculator and a correctly completed W-4 matter as much as the state rate.
California local taxes and payroll deductions
Nearly every California employee pays into State Disability Insurance. SDI is withheld from all wages with no cap, at a rate of roughly 1.2% to 1.3% in recent years, and it also funds Paid Family Leave benefits, so there is no separate PFL deduction. The calculator includes a field for SDI with a default of 1.3%; check the current rate on the EDD website and your pay stub. California has no state unemployment tax on employees, no local income tax on wages and no city wage tax, although San Francisco and a few other cities levy payroll taxes on employers rather than workers.
Your stub will show federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, California PIT withholding and CA SDI. If your employer offers a voluntary plan for disability insurance (VPDI), the SDI line may be replaced by a private plan deduction. Ask payroll if your SDI line looks unusual, and see our paycheck abbreviations glossary for SDI, PFL and other codes.
Retirement income, credits and special California rules
California does not tax Social Security benefits, but it does tax most pension, 401(k) and IRA distributions as ordinary income, and it has no special retirement income exclusion. The state offers a renter's credit, a nonrefundable credit for qualifying low and middle income renters, and the California Earned Income Tax Credit for working households with low earnings. Capital gains are taxed as ordinary income at the same graduated rates, which makes California unusually costly for investors and for anyone selling stock or a home with large gains.
Employees can claim exemptions and additional withholding on the DE 4, which is separate from the federal W-4. Supplemental wages such as bonuses are generally withheld at a flat 6.6% for California purposes, and 10.23% for stock options and bonuses in some cases. Those flat rates are only withholding; your real state tax is settled when you file, so a bonus check can look smaller than expected without changing your annual tax.
Living and working in California: how the tax burden compares
Even after a big income tax, California remains a magnet for higher-paying jobs, and average wages in tech, entertainment and health care are well above the national median. The trade-offs are high housing costs, a base sales tax rate of 7.25% with local add-ons that push many cities to 9% or 10%, and property tax of about 1% of purchase price under Proposition 13 plus local assessments. Property tax is limited by Prop 13, so long-time owners often pay far less than new buyers.
Compared with Texas or Florida, a $65,000 worker in California may lose several thousand dollars a year to state income tax and SDI, but comparisons must include rent, commuting and salary differences. Run the same salary through our Texas and Florida calculators, and use the salary needed for take-home pay calculator to see how much more you must earn in California to match your budget.
California income tax at a glance
- State income tax: graduated, from 1% to 13.3%
- State standard deduction: $5,540 single, $11,080 joint
- Personal exemption: $153 single, $306 joint (credit)
- State pre-tax retirement treatment: follows the federal exclusion
- Employee payroll programs: California SDI, about 1.3% of wages
- Withholding form: Form DE 4
- Agency: the California Franchise Tax Board and EDD
These are the assumptions built into the calculator above. Rates, exemptions and payroll premiums change from year to year, so verify each item with the agency listed before making a large financial decision.
What a $100 pre-tax contribution really costs in California
Contributing $100 per paycheck to a traditional 401(k) or HSA reduces your take-home pay by less than $100 because it lowers taxable income. In the $65,000 single-filer example for California, the annual contribution of $2,600 cuts net pay by only about $2,094, or $80.52 per biweekly paycheck, so the true cost of each $100 contribution is roughly $80.52. The saving comes from both federal and California income tax, though not from Social Security or Medicare. Use the 401(k) calculator to see how those contributions grow.
California paycheck rules: pay frequency, minimum wage and final pay
California has some of the strongest wage laws in the country. The statewide minimum wage is about $16.90 an hour in 2026, with higher local minimums in cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, and fast-food and health care workers have separate rates. Non-exempt employees receive daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours in a day, plus overtime after 40 hours in a week. Most employers must pay at least twice a month, and final wages are due immediately when an employee is fired and within 72 hours when an employee quits without notice. Employers must provide meal and rest breaks or pay a premium, and paid sick leave of at least 40 hours or five days applies to most workers. Confirm current amounts with the California Labor Commissioner.
Common mistakes with California paychecks
- Ignoring SDI. It applies to every dollar of wages, so higher earners pay more each year.
- Assuming bonuses are taxed at a special rate. California flat withholding on bonuses is not your final rate.
- Budgeting from gross pay. Plan with net pay per paycheck, about $1,903.12 in the $65,000 example.
- Forgetting FICA. Social Security and Medicare add 7.65% for most employees. See what is FICA tax.
- Not updating withholding. Review your W-4 and Form DE 4 after a move, marriage or new job, using the W-4 withholding calculator.
Key takeaways
- California taxes wages with graduated rates from 1% to 13.3%.
- Pre-tax retirement deferrals lower federal income tax but not FICA.
- A single worker earning $65,000 keeps about 76% of gross pay in the standard example.
- Compare states using total cost of living, not only income tax.
- Confirm current figures with the California Franchise Tax Board and EDD and IRS.gov.
Budgeting on the median California wage
On the $58,240 median, the common guideline of spending no more than 30% of gross pay on housing allows rent of about $1,456 a month. Using the 50/30/20 rule on the $3,890 monthly take-home pay, that is about $1,945 for needs such as rent, food and transport, $1,167 for wants and $778 for savings and debt payments.
If rents run above $1,456 for the home you want, the usual fixes are a roommate, a longer commute or a second income in the household; the rent affordability calculator tests your own numbers.

How to check this calculator
This calculator shows the tax year, assumptions, inputs, and worked examples used to explain the estimate. Where result tables are provided, you can enter the example values in the calculator and compare the output with the displayed example to reproduce the calculation.
Tax and payroll rules can change, and a calculator estimate is not the same as an employer payroll statement or filed tax return.
